A bit of history:

If you are a lover of tableware, you know that these glasses are known throughout the world.

These are the famous Roemer : Rhine wine glasses. The first examples were made by Karl Fabergé for Tsar Nicholas II for the wines of Alsace where there are 6 main grape varieties, each color represents a grape variety. This is why you will always find them with 6 color trim.

These double crystal glasses, entirely handmade , are made of white crystal, then covered with a layer of colored crystal. It is by cutting them that we find the primary layer of transparent crystal, to sublimate the contrast between the deep colors and the magical sparkle of the crystal. It is important to know that when we cut crystal, it becomes matte, it then goes through different stages of polishing to make it shiny again.

Crystal is a man-made material ; not to be confused with rock crystal which is extracted from the ground. Clear and transparent crystal is therefore obtained by high temperature fusion (1450°C) for 36 hours of a mixture:

- 3 parts of SILICA (very fine sand)

- 2 parts LEAD OXIDE (called crystal, increases shine)

- 1 part POTASH and some chemicals that help with fusion.

For colored crystal, we add to this composition at the time of fusion of metal oxides and metals:

- Blue = Cobalt Oxide

- Yellow = Iron oxide

- Red = Gold
